Upstate Rep. Gets Clinton Seat

I am happy with Paterson's choice of Kirsten Gillibrand to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate. Unlike other names tossed around, she represents an upstate district (the 20th, which stretches across the upstate counties of Saratoga, Dutchess, Columbia, Rensselaer, Washington, Warren, Delaware, Greene, Essex and Otsego). Still a bit "south" of me, but , as an upstater myself, this selection makes me happy.

NYC is overly represented in Albany and D. C. and it is refreshing to know that someone who realizes what the rest of the state is actually like will be stepping into the junior senator seat. Hillary made a point of visiting this area numerous times, and small towns here have Hillary to thank for funds to create municipal water systems that were sorely needed.

From Wikipedia, a cliff notes on her stand on issues:

Gillibrand is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition. She opposes gun control. She supports extending the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts for middle class families; stem cell research; and the Children's Health and Medicare Protection Act. Gillibrand opposes attempts to partially privatize Social Security. She strongly supported passage of the 2008 Farm Bill. Gillibrand broke with former Governor Spitzer on the issue of illegal immigration, opposing his plan to issue New York State drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. She supports same-sex marriage.

Congratulations, Rep. Gillibrand!
