How to Squander the Presidency in One Year | CommonDreams.org

"...Barack Obama has now, in just a year's time, become the single most inept president perhaps in all of American history, and certainly in my lifetime. Never has so much political advantage been pissed away so rapidly, and what's more in the context of so much national urgency and crisis. It's astonishing, really, to contemplate how much has been lost in a single year. ..."

Watching the hope-and-changers wake up to what so many of us saw two years ago gives me no comfort. I am not a "told you so" kind of person. It is sad to see our country is where I feared it would be, with an Obama presidency. The damage to the Democratic Party may well prove fatal.

Rather than look at his track record of what he had DONE, so many bought the bullshit of hope of what he MIGHT DO. That is a recipe for disappointment. People are what they show us, not what they say they are. Obama has shown us what a "present" presidency accomplishes. What pandering to our enemies gets us. How to throw away the biggest cache of political advantage ANYONE has ever had given to them by backing losers (the Olympic bid, Martha Coakley, the climate summit) and ending up on indelibly and forever linked to losers. That makes you a loser, and it makes the U.S. look like a loser. Terrible judgement by a president, with consequences that lower the reputation and esteem of what being the U.S. president means.

The best we can hope for is that after one term, he gets the boot, and a president can be found who will lead, rather than campaign. However I don't expect that leader to come from the Democratic Party. They will be forced to back Obama's re-election bid. There is no will in the party that would stand up to him and say you need to step aside because you are killing us.

Meanwhile, the ranks of Independents will grow. And many of them remain, like me, registered Democrats, so I can vote in primaries, who will NOT vote party line.

The only good news in this disaster is that the Republicans have yet to wake up to the opportunity. If they dropped their most heinous and bigoted stances and stopped kow-towing to Christians, if they became an actual alternative that welcomed Americans rather than judged them, they'd have no shortage of new members.

All you people who feared John McCain would drop dead and Sarah Palin would become president can now ask yourself would she really - really - have done a WORSE job than Obama has done? And hey, John's still alive, ain't he?
